Welcome

My work as a silk fiber artist was born out of my work as a research scientist at a Biotech start up in Boston, Massachusetts.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, I completed my undergraduate degree in Chemistry at Washington & Jefferson college. I always enjoyed art, which led me to take studio classes in drawing and painting and sparked a love for creating. I moved to Boston, MA in 2014 for work, where I used my creative practice to cope with the many changes that were happening in my life.

In 2016, I joined a start-up company that used silk protein to stabilize biologics. Seeing this fine and strong material used for scientific advancements, I decided to explore its use outside of the lab in my art work.

From a process perspective, the work I do is grounded in repetition and meditation. When I acquire the silk (unraveled from the cocoon), I separate it into smaller bundles for dyeing. This process is done one strand of silk at a time, as the silk is sticky and can knot on itself, making the hank unusable. I then attach each piece of silk individually to a polyester burlap upholstered frame using a surgical knot.
